Four Aspects of a Social Cognitive Skills Training Program:

Social cognitive skills help people understand themselves, understand other people, and respond appropriately in social situations. These skills are important in everyday life. They help a person understand what another person may be thinking or feeling, recognize social expectations, communicate effectively, and make suitable decisions.

Social cognition includes several related abilities, including understanding mental states, recognizing emotions, interpreting social information, and responding to social situations. Theory of Mind, for example, refers to the ability to understand that other people can have thoughts, beliefs, intentions, and feelings that may be different from one’s own (Frith & Frith, 2003). Research also shows that social cognition is a broad and complex area that includes both cognitive and emotional processes (Frith & Frith, 2003; Lee et al., 2018).

A Social Cognitive Skills Training Program can therefore teach these abilities in a structured and practical way. The program can focus on four important areas: Cognitive Theory of Mind, Affective Theory of Mind, Interpersonal Understanding of Social Norms, and Intrapersonal Understanding of Social Norms. Together, these areas can help individuals understand other people, manage social situations, and reflect on their own behavior.

1. Cognitive Theory of Mind: Cognitive Theory of Mind is the ability to understand what another person may be thinking, believing, knowing, or intending. It involves recognizing that another person may have information or beliefs that are different from one’s own.

For example, imagine that a child puts a toy inside a box and leaves the room. Another child moves the toy to a drawer while the first child is away. When the first child returns, the question is: “Where will the child look for the toy?” A person using Cognitive Theory of Mind understands that the child will probably look in the box because the child does not know that the toy has been moved.

This ability is closely related to perspective taking and mentalizing. Mentalizing allows people to make sense of behavior by considering the mental states behind it (Frith & Frith, 2003). Children gradually develop more advanced forms of this ability. Explicit understanding of false beliefs becomes possible during early childhood, although social reasoning continues to develop with experience (Frith & Frith, 2003).

In a training program, Cognitive Theory of Mind can be developed through stories, pictures, role play, thought bubbles, social situations, and questions such as “What does he think?”, “What does she know?”, and “Why did he do that?” For example, a trainer might show a picture of a student looking at an empty chair and ask, “What might the student think happened to his friend?”

These activities encourage the learner to look beyond visible behavior and consider another person’s thoughts and intentions. Previous intervention research has used explicit instruction in Theory of Mind and related social cognitive principles. Ozonoff and Miller (1995), for example, investigated a social skills program that taught adolescents with autism both social interaction skills and the underlying social cognitive principles needed to understand other people’s mental states.

However, training should not assume that every social difficulty results from a lack of knowledge. Research has highlighted an important difference between knowing what to do and being able to use that knowledge successfully in real situations (Gates et al., 2023). Therefore, practice should occur in different real-life situations rather than only in structured exercises.

2. Affective Theory of Mind: Affective Theory of Mind is concerned with understanding another person’s emotional and affective state. It involves recognizing how someone may feel and understanding that a person’s emotions can influence behavior.

For example, a student may arrive late to class and appear quiet. A simple judgment might be, “He is being rude.” A person with better affective understanding may consider other possibilities. The student may be embarrassed, worried, tired, or upset about something that happened before class.

Affective Theory of Mind therefore encourages people to ask questions such as, “How might this person feel?”, “Why might they feel this way?”, and “How might their feelings affect their behavior?”

Research has distinguished cognitive and affective components of Theory of Mind. Cognitive processes are more concerned with understanding beliefs, thoughts, and intentions, while affective processes involve understanding emotions and feelings. Shamay Tsoory et al. (2007), for example, examined differences between cognitive and affective Theory of Mind and found evidence that these processes can involve partly different neural mechanisms.

Training in this area can include emotion cards, photographs, short stories, videos, role-playing, and real-life examples. A trainer might show a picture of a person receiving criticism and ask the learner to identify possible feelings such as disappointment, embarrassment, anger, or sadness.

The learner can then be asked what the person might need. The answer may be reassurance, privacy, encouragement, or simply time to calm down.

Affective Theory of Mind is also connected with empathy. A randomized controlled study involving children with autism found that Theory of Mind training was associated with improvement in observed empathic responsiveness (Holopainen et al., 2019). At the same time, the findings should not be interpreted as meaning that Theory of Mind training automatically improves every aspect of social functioning. Research suggests that gains in trained skills may not always transfer broadly to everyday social behavior (Begeer et al., 2015).

3. Interpersonal Understanding of Social Norms: Interpersonal understanding of social norms refers to understanding the rules and expectations that guide interactions with other people. Social norms help people know what behavior is generally expected, acceptable, or unacceptable in a particular social situation.

For example, people normally wait for their turn when someone else is speaking. A person may also understand that interrupting someone repeatedly can make communication difficult. Similarly, saying “thank you” after receiving help is a common social expectation.

Social norms can be formal or informal. A formal rule may say that students must not use mobile phones during an examination. An informal social norm may involve waiting in line rather than pushing ahead of others.

Understanding social norms requires more than memorizing rules. A person needs to understand when a norm applies, why it exists, and how the situation may change the appropriate response.

Research on the development of normative understanding shows that social norms play an important role in children’s social reasoning and behavior (Paulus & Schmidt, 2018). Research has also found that information about what is considered appropriate or “right” can influence children’s prosocial behavior, such as sharing (House & Tomasello, 2018).

A Social Cognitive Skills Training Program can teach interpersonal norms through practical examples. For instance, learners can be given a situation in which two people are talking while a third person wants to join the conversation. The trainer can ask:

  • “Should the person interrupt?”
  • “What could the person say?”
  • “How might the two people feel if they were interrupted?”
  • “What would be a respectful way to join the conversation?”

The learner can then practice the appropriate response through role-play.

Importantly, social norms can vary between families, communities, cultures, and situations. Therefore, training should avoid presenting every social behavior as a universal rule. Instead, learners should be encouraged to notice context and understand that different settings may have different expectations.

4. Intrapersonal Understanding of Social Norms: Intrapersonal understanding of social norms focuses on the person’s understanding of how social expectations relate to their own thoughts, feelings, choices, and behavior. It involves self-awareness and self-reflection.

For example, a student may understand that speaking loudly during a quiet study session can disturb other people. The student then asks themselves, “Am I speaking too loudly?”, “How might this affect others?”, and “What should I do differently?”

This is different from simply knowing a social rule. The person is applying the rule to their own behavior.

Intrapersonal understanding can therefore include skills such as self-monitoring, self-reflection, emotional awareness, and recognizing the consequences of one’s actions. These skills can help individuals pause before reacting and make more thoughtful choices.

For example, suppose a person becomes angry during a disagreement with a friend. Instead of immediately shouting, the person may recognize, “I am becoming angry. If I continue speaking this way, I may hurt my friend. I need to take a moment and respond calmly.”

This type of reflection can be practiced through self-monitoring worksheets, diaries, role-play, feedback, and reflection questions. A learner may be asked to consider:

  • “What happened?”
  • “What did I think?”
  • “What did I feel?”
  • “How did I respond?”
  • “How did the other person respond?”
  • “What could I do differently next time?”

These questions connect social understanding with personal behavior.

Research on social cognition also suggests that knowing social information and successfully using it are not always the same thing. Gates et al. (2023) emphasized the importance of distinguishing social knowledge from social performance. This means that a person may understand a social rule but still have difficulty applying it in a stressful or unfamiliar situation.

For this reason, intrapersonal training should provide repeated opportunities to practice skills in realistic situations. The goal is not simply to make a person memorize social rules. The goal is to help the person understand their own behavior and make choices that work for them and for the people around them.

How the Four Areas Work Together:

The four aspects are closely connected. They should not be treated as completely separate skills.

Consider a simple example. A student notices that another student is sitting alone after receiving a low grade.

First, Cognitive Theory of Mind helps the student think about what the other student might be thinking. The student may think, “She may believe that she performed badly.”

Second, Affective Theory of Mind helps the student consider the other person’s feelings. The student may recognize that she could be disappointed, embarrassed, or worried.

Third, Interpersonal Understanding of Social Norms helps the student understand what would be socially appropriate. The student may realize that asking gently, “Are you okay?” is more appropriate than making a joke about the grade.

Fourth, Intrapersonal Understanding of Social Norms helps the student monitor their own behavior. The student may think, “I should give her space if she does not want to talk.”

This example shows how social cognitive skills work together. Understanding another person’s thoughts is useful, but it is not enough. The person also needs to understand emotions, social expectations, and their own behavior.

Practical Activities for a Social Cognitive Skills Training Program:

A useful training program can combine several simple activities.

  • Story-Based Activities: Learners can read short stories and answer questions about what each character thinks, feels, wants, and knows.
  • Role Play: Learners can act out common situations such as joining a conversation, asking for help, dealing with disagreement, apologizing, or responding to criticism.
  • Emotion Recognition: Pictures, facial expressions, and short situations can be used to help learners identify possible emotions.
  • Thought Bubbles: A picture can show several characters in the same situation. Learners can write what each character might be thinking. This makes different perspectives easier to understand.
  • Social Situation Analysis: The trainer can present a situation and ask learners to identify the social expectation, possible responses, and possible consequences.
  • Self-Reflection: After an activity, learners can reflect on what they thought, what they felt, how they responded, and what they might do differently next time.
  • Real Life Practice: Finally, learners should practice skills in everyday environments. This is important because success in a training room does not always mean that a skill will automatically appear in daily life. Research on Theory of Mind interventions has found improvements in targeted understanding, while broader generalization to other areas of social functioning can be more limited (Begeer et al., 2015).

In conclusion, social cognitive skills are important for successful communication and relationships. They help people understand what others may think and feel, recognize social expectations, and manage their own behavior.

The four aspects of the Social Cognitive Skills Training Program provide a useful practical framework. Cognitive Theory of Mind helps individuals understand other people’s thoughts and beliefs. Affective Theory of Mind helps them understand emotions and feelings. Interpersonal understanding of social norms helps them recognize expectations in social situations. Intrapersonal understanding of social norms helps them reflect on their own behavior and make better choices.

Effective training should use simple explanations, real-life examples, role-play, reflection, and repeated practice. It should also recognize that social behavior is influenced by context and that knowing a social rule is not always the same as being able to use it successfully.

The main purpose of social cognitive training should therefore be to help people understand themselves and others more effectively. With appropriate support and meaningful practice, social cognitive skills can become more useful in everyday communication, relationships, education, and community life.
